DuxNews – A way to get support for students / need volunteer

The Idea:

We know that there are students with visual impairments who do not have full access to online curriculum, supplemental activities, or resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea of this project is to connect students and their families to volunteers who want to provide support during this unprecedented time of need.

How It Works for Students and Families:

Fill out the form to describe what support you or your child with a visual impairment need in order to access education.

How It Works for Volunteers:

For example, if you know braille:

  • Prepare materials to be embossed in braille
  • Emboss and mail braille materials
  • Prepare tactile books that include braille
  • Support a student who is reading braille and needs assistance with contractions, formatting, etc.

For example, if you do not know braille:

  • Type a copy of a worksheet or resource that is not accessible
  • Screenshare with a student (e.g., Zoom, Skype) to read content on the screen that is not accessible to the student
  • Use phone or screensharing (e.g., Zoom, Skype) to tutor a student in a math concept, science concept, etc.
  • Make texture books, worksheets, etc. for children who are not yet print or braille readers
  • Design fun activities that are accessible to a child who has a visual impairment based on the child’s needs
  • Read aloud or partner read with a child and ask comprehension questions
